Die Zeit der Jahrhundertwende: Hohe Arbeitslosigkeit und Abenteuerlust bringt tausende von Japanern dazu, ihr Land auf der Suche nach einem besseren Leben zu verlassen. Auch der Veteran Yamada und die junge Titoe zieht es in die Fremde. Da die Emigrationsbehörden Familien bevorzugen, heiraten sie, ohne sich zu kennen und gehen nach Brasilien, um auf einer Kaffeeplantage zu arbeiten. Doch der Traum vom besseren Leben entpuppt sich schnell als Alptraum. Die Lebensbedingungen sind schlecht, die Arbeiter leben wie Sklaven, doch nur wenige begreifen, daß sie sich organisieren müssen, um ihre Rechte durchzusetzen.

It's the turn of the century a hundred years ago in Japan. High unemployment and a spirit of adventure cause thousands of people to leave their homeland in a search for a better life. The veteran Yamada and the young Titoe also respond to the call of the wild. Since the emigration authorities prefer families, the two get married without knowing one another and travel to Brazil to work on a coffee plantation. But the dream of the good life soon degenerates into a nightmare. Living conditions are appalling and the workers are treated like slaves. Yet only a few understand that they will have to organise if they want to have their rights.
