Lynne Ramsays erster Spielfilm zeigt ein erstaunliches Gespür fürs Detail. RATCATCHER handelt von dem 12-jährigen James und seiner Familie in Glasgow während des Müllabfuhrstreiks von 1970. Damals stapelte sich der Müll in den heruntergekommenen Mietskasernen und ergriff auf ominöse Art und Weise Besitz vom Leben ihrer Bewohner. Als James eines Tages am Kanal spielt, offenbart sich ihm ein schreckliches Geheimnis, das seinen Blick auf die Welt radikal verändert. Außerdem provoziert dieser Vorfall bei ihm eine merkwürdige Faszination für den sich durch die Kanäle windenden schwarzen Stoff. Am Rand des Kanals schließt James aber auch Freundschaft mit Magaret Anne, einem naiven pubertierenden Mädchen, das " für die örtliche Jungens-Gang leichte Beute ist. Beide genießen die zärtliche und unschuldige Beziehung, die sich zwischen ihnen entwickelt. Doch James sucht einen goldenen Ort", wo die Welt wieder in Ordnung ist. Mit einem Bus verlässt er die Stadt.

Lynne Ramsay 's first feature has an amazing eye for detail. RATCATCHER centres on 12-year-old James and his family in a tattered Glasgow during the dustmen's strike in 1970, when the rubbish piled up around the run-down tenements, ominously encroaching on the inhabitants' lives. As James plays by the local canal, he becomes party to a terrible secret. His sense of the world is totally changed by this and the incident also inspires a strange fascination with the thick snake of black water. On the bank of the canal he befriends Margaret Anne, a gawky pubescent girl who is easy prey for the local gang of boys. Their tender yet innocent relationship which the two strike up proves a respite for them both. But James is in search for a golden place where life can be all right again; he takes a bus out of town...
