Takes
the viewer straight into a divorce hearing at the Family Law Courts
in central Tehran and to the heart of the conditions that means
marriage to a woman in Iran, as a husband pleads at his defence:
‘She goes out without permission’. The judge advises the wife that
since it is her husband who is filing for divorce, she should return
home and make herself attractive so that he might reconsider their
situation. This documentary tackles the issues of women in contemporary
Iranian society concentrating on three cases. Jamileh, who punishes
her husband for beating her; Ziba, a 16-year-old girl appealing
for divorce from her 38-year-old husband; and Maryam who is fighting
for the custody of her daughters. Divorce Iranian Style shows not
only the despair and the anger but also the small victories and
utopian moments that three women – all trying to get a divorce –
go through.
