Ripples of Change is a unique look at contemporary Japan through the eyes of a Japanese woman living in the US. The director leaves her country because of the stifling conditions for women there. While living in New York, she befriends another Japanese woman and learns about the Japanese women’s movement that had occurred two decades before. Intrigued she travels back to Japan in search of veterans of the movement. Five former members reflect on the movement’s ideas and sensibilities. Archival footage vividly evokes the atmosphere of times. Scenes of the women’s lives today reveal who they have become after twenty years. Crisscrossing the country to meet the women, she reveals a deep struggle for individuality taking place in Japan today.
