Diva Dolorosa ist eine Stummfilm-Kompilation der großen Gesten und Gefühlen der italienischen Diven. Zwischen 1913 und 1920 wurden in Italien einige Filme produziert, die stark von den schwarzen romantischen Idealen des Fin de Siècle beeinflusst waren. In vielen Fällen wurde die Hauptrolle von beliebten Filmstars wie Lyda Borelli, Pina Menichelli und Francesca Bertini gespielt.
Sie waren die ersten Divas der Leinwand. In ihren Filmen zeigen sie das Leben als ein Körperschauspiel. Dies war sowohl ihre Stärke wie auch ihre Tragik. Sie lebten eine einzigartige sexuelle Unabhängigkeit, aber dafür zahlten sie den Preis, zur Hysterie verdammt zu sein. "Diese Filme sind voll Sexualität, ohne Sex zu zeigen. Meiner Meinung nach ist der Kuss ein wunderbarer filmischer Ausdruck von Sex, ohne die pragmatischen Seiten von Sex zu zeigen. So gesehen waren die auftretenden Diven und ihre Filme ein einziger langer Kuss." (Peter Delpeut)

At the end of the nineteenth century, many artists were guided by the ideals of Black Romanticism. In the process, Beauty always coincided with Grief. Pleasure did not exist without Pain. Illness and Sensuality were paradoxical partners, and Love had made a firm pact with Death.
Between 1913 and 1920, a number of films was produced in Italy that were strongly influenced by the black-romantic ideals of the fin de siècle. In many cases, the leading part was played by popular movie stars like Lyda Borelli, Pina Menichelli and Francesca Bertini.
They were the first divas of the silver screen. In their films they perform the lives of their protagonists as a spectacle of the body. It marks at the same time their strength as well as their tragedy. They carouse in an unsurpassed sexual independance, but the price they have to pay is that they are doomed to hysteria. "These films are full of sexuality without showing real sex. To my opinion, the kiss is a wonderful cinematic expression of sex without showing the pragmatics of sex.
