Begun in 1993 at the request of the film’s subjects (who are also Wyman’s friends), the film intent is to explore the complexity of Female-to-Male (FTM) transsexuality through a close-range/diaristic approach. The documentary follows San Francisco-dwelling butch “Sue” through six years of her transsexual transformation into “a guy named Theo”, tracing his physiological and psychological changes and their impact on his lesbian partner and community of close friends. One individual’s story, contextualized in a crucial mid-1990’s moment of coalescing trans-identity, to ask complicated questions about gender, identity, labels, and the way that even things that seem permanent inevitably change.
