"Life
has passed and we have achieved nothing, says Ester (70) the
youngest of three sisters. Karola (78) the eldest is silent. Fruma,
Tsipi Reibenbachs mother, is trying to write her memories.
They are Holocaust survivors. More than 50 years have passed but
they are still unable to tell their story. This is a film about
their trauma. After World War II all three were in love with one
man, the filmmakers father, but only Fruma won him, though
he loved the youngest, Ester, most of all. This is a film about
the relations between the three sisters, who talk on the telephone
occasionally but never meet.
The film follows their daily life - three women who, in their old
age, devote most of their time to caring for their sick husbands.
The camera follows them in the shower and during intimate medical
examinations, exposes the wrinkles and veins which will not disappear
and the tabu of the naked bodies of the elderly. They are forced
to deal with the weakness, loneliness and anger of old age. In the
background lurks the trauma of the past. The Nazis stole not only
their youth but also their ability to grow old in serene fulfillment.
Three Sisters is a film about people whose time is running out.
In the present looms the fear of death and the feeling of having
missed out. Despite the fact that this is a film about age, it is
also a film of much humor and optimism.
